Tips for tracking your 50 states

  • State abbreviations are on by default so small New England states are easy to hit. Switch them off in the Labels tab for a cleaner picture.
  • Rhode Island, Delaware and D.C. are small targets on a phone. Use search or the list instead.
  • Add a pin for a national park or a city you loved with the Labels tab.
  • For a world version, try the countries visited map.

Questions

Does D.C. count as a state?

No. Washington, D.C. is on the map and can be colored, but the count is out of the 50 states.

What counts as visiting a state?

Rules vary. Many people count any state they've stood in; stricter "state counters" require an overnight stay or a meal. Driving through without stopping is usually the grey area. Decide your own rule and stick to it.

Why is Alaska drawn so small?

Alaska and Hawaii are moved into insets and Alaska is scaled down (as on most US maps) so the lower 48 stay large. Alaska is really about a fifth the size of the lower 48 combined, and the largest state by far.
