Tips for a higher score

  • Zoom in with + (or pinch) for crowded areas like the Balkans, the Caucasus or West Africa.
  • Learn anchor countries first, then the ones between them: Germany, then its nine neighbors.
  • Print a blank world map and fill it in by hand; writing names helps them stick.
  • Teachers: the world map with country names makes a ready answer key.

Questions

How is the quiz scored?

A country counts as correct only if you find it on the first try. After two misses you get a hint naming two neighbors; after three the answer is shown in red. Your best percentage for each map is kept in this browser.

Why are some tiny countries left out of the world quiz?

Micro-states such as Monaco, Nauru or Tuvalu are smaller than a pixel on a world map, so they would be impossible to click. Play the Europe or regional quizzes to practice the small ones at a bigger scale.

How can I make my own map quiz?

Open the map maker, switch on names, export the labeled version as an answer key, then turn names off and export again or print the blank map for students.

What is the best way to memorize countries?

Learn by neighborhood rather than alphabetically: master one region, then its borders. Short daily rounds beat long sessions, which is known as spaced repetition.
